You might wonder about the end of my employment. We - the German subsidiary as well as many others in Europe - were almost completely assigned to one big industry customer. Unfortunately this customer changed his mind and decided to go with another IT provider. So we all became redundant all over Europe: Germany, France, Italy, Spain etc. This gave me the opportunity to travel. The plan was to travel around the world in one year. I canceled all my contracts for the house, for my car, all subscriptions for IT magazines, telephone, internet access etc., packed all my stuff into boxes, stored these away into a self storage area and started to travel by catching a flight to New York City.
I’ve been in the US for 3 months crossing the country, several weeks in New Zealand, 2 months in Australia at various places. Via Singapore I got to the Asian region, where I also visited Malaysia, Thailand, Hong Kong, Taiwan, India and the Philippines.
What can I say: it’s not just interesting , but exciting, enlightening, also exhausting. I talked and discussed with lots of people around the world and shared thoughts and opinions. I experienced other cultures and religions, have seen funny but also sad things, rich people besides others living in poverty.
As a result I see, that I am really highly flexible, able to adapt to new environments, can get around everywhere, eat everything, am physical healthy, find foreign culture not intimidating and able to behave accordingly not to disturb others. Of course I also had to learn, that not all cities and streets in the world are as safe as you find in Germany. But I also learned to realize difficult situations, how to avoid problems and get around safely.
Now I am looking for an employment, where I can combine my capabilities in my profession with the flexibility I proofed on the travel. I will go wherever an interesting position is vacant. Needless to say, that I know, that networkers are sometimes only allowed to work at night, when others don’t and I’m also not afraid to be on my own in the middle of nowhere for an installation just with my laptop and a replacement switch to configure.
